Synopsis of the Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Eight-year-old boy Bruno (Asa Butterfield) and his family move from Berlin to the countryside on a transfer order from his father, a Nazi officer. Losing his friends, Bruno soon becomes interested in the “farm” near his new home, where a group of men in “striped pajamas” work all day long, and one of them serves the Brunos, whom he describes as dirty and discreet. His mother was secretly worried by his surroundings and Bruno’s behavior, but his Nazi father stopped any suspicion of established policy in the family.
Bruno secretly made friends with a boy of the same age on the other side of the fence, Shmul, and often brought him food. Amid the tension at home and the transition of her sister into the adult world, Shmul is Bruno’s only friend. One day Bruno decides to go to the other side of the wire in order to meet Schmul’s father…
Based on the novel of the same name by John Byrne, the film won the Audience Choice Award at the 2008 Chicago International Film Festival.
