Synopsis of Carol
In the 1950s in the United States, a young woman named Therese (Rooney Mara) works as a saleswoman in a New York department store, but she yearned for a job as a photographer. One day, a beautiful and elegant blonde lady Carol (Cate Blanchett) comes to the department store to buy Christmas gifts, and the result and Therese hit it off. After the two meet, Therese learns that Carol has a daughter and is divorcing her husband, Haji (Kyle Chandler). Through letters, dating, and road trips, Therese and Carol discover the true love of each other at a time when society was not allowed to do so. Therese’s boyfriend thinks she was just confused, and Carol’s husband hires a private investigator to investigate, hoping to leave her with nothing in divorce proceedings. The moment to test the two women finally arrived: under social pressure can they stick to their hearts, regardless of the cost of the emotional road to the end?
“Carol” is the new work of the famous American independent director Todd Haynes, which entered the main competition of the 68th Cannes Film Festival and won the Best Actress award. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 anonymous lesbian novella The Price of Salt, which the publisher initially refused to release due to the subject’s sensitivity. It is called “The price of salt” because in the 17th century “salt” had another meaning of female lust. In this book, it is a metaphor for the situation of the women: without love, it is like meat without salt; So how much are you willing to pay for that love?
