The film is a three part theme (love and sex) film co directed by Michelangelo Antonioni (“The Point of Danger”), Steven Soderbergh (“Balance”), and Wong Kar wai (“Hands”).
Hand “tells the story of a young tailor (Zhang Zhen) in Hong Kong in the 1960s, who loved socialite Miss Hua (Gong Li) for many years without expecting anything in return. The imagery is magnificent, full of texture and a hint of sadness. The story of “Balance” takes place in 1950s New York, where the advertiser Nick Penrose (Robert Downey) is always troubled by his dreams and has to seek help from his psychologist Pearl (Alan Arkin). Although the tone is absurd and abnormal, it can also be seen as a self deprecating and silent comedy.
The critical line of danger remains Antonioni’s long-standing focus on the theme of gender relations in modern society, with a strong philosophical flavor.
